A Study on Practice of Weaning and Supplementary Food for a Baby in a Rural Area of Korea


Abstract
This study was conducted to find out practice of weaning and supplementary food for the infants and toddlers in a rural area of Korea from September 1-30, 1573. Shin-dong Myun, Choon Sung Gun, Kang Won Province was the study area and the subjects were the 838 mothers whose last baby was 0-5 years of. old by September 1. 1973. Obtained results and findings from this study are summarized as follows;
1. The accumulative percents of weaned baby at the age of 12 months was 9.2 percents, 26.61 percents at the 18 months, 42.5 percents at the 24 months, 51.5 percents at the 30 months, 66.6 percents at the 60¢¥ months and the remained 33. 4 percents were still lactating. Therefore, 66.6 percents of the total finished weaning.
2. About 75 percents of the mothers fed their breast milk as a main food for the last baby until weaning.
3. Starting age of supplementary food for the baby at six months of age was 11.5 percents, 17.4
percents at 7-8 months, 20.7 percents at 9-10 months, 23.4 percents at 11-12 months, 27.0 percents after 15 months of age among finished weaning.
4. Starting with solid form of food for supplementary diet was 69.7 percents while semi-liquid form was 15.7 percents and liquid form was 5.4 percents among finished weaning.
..5.. Rice gruel was recommended by the 40.2 percents of the mothers as a proper supplementary diet while a half-boiled egg was 20.0 percents, and vegetables, fruits, meat and noodle were named.
6. Among the total, 36. 2 percents of the mothers have no taboo food for a supplementary diet while 49. 2 percents of them named seasoned food, flesh of dog, corn, sweet potato, flesh of a duck, unripe fruits, contaminated food, chicken, pork and fish.
7. More than a half of the mothers (54. 1%) had no opportunity of lesson on weaning and supple¡þmentary diet at all. Among mothers who had opportunity of education through mass communication was 45.5 percents and from the health center was 19. 5 percents.
8. Only two thirds of the baby (62.6%) were counted as healthy at the beginning stage of supplementary diet, 71.3 percents during the mid-time and 80.6 percents after finished weaning¢¥ while remained babies at each stage were suffered with complaints and symptoms of weight loss (18.5%), frequent disease(18.2%), often, crying and irritability (11.6%), deep attachment to. mother (26.6%) and diarrhea (0.6%). The mothers also experienced following difficulties and problems in practicing weaning and supplementary diet for: their, babies; difficult to introduce . new food (8.9%), baby suffered with diarrhea and other¢¥ disease (9.8%), difficult to find proper food for weaning (28.5%), puzzled due to lack of knowledge on supplementary diet and weaning methods (8.4%), combined 2 or 3 of the above items (14.5%). and others (26.3%).
